UPPER SCHOOL
Upper School (Grades 9-12 & Forms III-VI) students at Albany Academy for Girls & The Albany Academy are deeply engaged in a rigorous college preparatory program that emphasizes academics, performance in the arts, participation in athletics and development of leadership skills through community service activities. Single-gender classes in the core courses in grades 9 and 10 ensure sensitivity to how boys and girls learn differently. Beginning in ninth grade, students receive guidance in choosing academic courses in which they will be both challenged and successful. Advanced Placement courses, honors tutorials, independent study projects and internships allow students to pursue advanced-level work and further explore interests.
Our Coordinate Program in grades 11 and 12 provides a broader curriculum that allows us to offer a wide array of AP courses and electives, and gives boys and girls the chance to take part in co-ed classes where students learn from each other in a supportive and positive environment. A rigorous curriculum and stellar faculty help Academies students become critical, creative and independent thinkers. Students and teachers enjoy a dynamic relationship that is warm and respectful
Whether it is participation in a team sport, an art show, a theater production or the individualized projects that students do as part of a class, students of all ages at the Academies are consistently called upon to “stand and deliver” and take responsibility for a team or individual effort. This brings students along as confident people who are comfortable with leadership and responsibility.
Additionally, the Global Initiatives program at the Academies has created a school environment conducive for developing skills for 21st century learning and fostering a broader understanding of the world in which we live.
